I do not think furthering democracy and freedom has ever been at the top of our agenda- though our government frequently likes to pay lip service to that idea. What seems to have been at the top of our agenda, is furthering our multinational corporations, and before there were multinationals, furthering the business of America (whish as you know, is business)- and that is not always the same thing as furthering democracy and freedom. In fact, sometimes furthering democracy and freedom, and making sure our business interests go well, are totally at odds. When that happens, I occasionally feel sorry about what America does. That doesn't mean I don't like my country; I simply feel it can do better.
