<the Pat Bucchanan solution>

I haven't explained my thoughts well, if you think I'm an isolationist.

My position is exactly the opposite: aggressive proactive engagement. And not just military engagement, not just the oil-for-protection barter deal, where a flow of oil in one direction is paid for by a flow of soldiers in the other direction. I mean engagement politically/culturally/economically/socially/idealogically. I mean listening to Them, not automatically dismissing their complaints. I mean not demonizing them, not treating them as if they were two-legged devils disguised as humans (which is the way most Americans think of terrorists).

My view is that the world is a spacecraft, with all the astronauts holding grenades. I can't take grenades away from all the other astronauts, there is no other spacecraft to go to, there are no walls I can build to protect me if anyone else gets pissed off enough to pull the pin. I am my brother's keeper, not because I am a nice guy, but because I have no choice.
