Great post, Jacob.

I noticed that you capitalized Them.

Are you a Joseph Campbell fan?

Yea, but the problem is, the other astronauts with their grenades don't see it that way. They think they can take your grenade away from you.

And I'd have to agree with them, in this case.

But your analogy is really even more flawed than that. You've given up at the outset. You've actually assigned everybody grenades. You've made yourself a hostage. You've convinced yourself you have no choice. But you don't speak for me, and you don't speak for anyone else. So if you and I are ever together on a real spacecraft with these guys, and they go after you to get your grenade, I'll probably be right in there with them, because I'd rather try to get it myself first than just let them have it.

I mean engagement politically/culturally/economically/socially/idealogically. I mean listening to Them, not automatically dismissing their complaints. I mean not demonizing them, not treating them as if they were two-legged devils disguised as humans (which is the way most Americans think of terrorists).

Thanks for the clarifaction, I thought I was confused.

The problem is that a large number of them hate you. Hate the fact of you. Hate is not the same as anger. Hate is a committment to destroy. You cannot engage the way you suggest with hate.

Although, as an overall direction, your approach is the correct one. However, if all you offer is carrot, the people who hate you will take your carrot and then try to kill you.

Paul

You would have to define who you are talking about. We don't want to "Reason" with the actual Terrorists. We want to find, fix, and kill them. They are not "Bad Boys" we are going to rehabilitate. This business of "Oh, more will just spring up," is just fear.

If we destroy their organizations, their source of money, and make countries stop hiding them, we can get the problem under control. What seems to get lost in the noise is that the Muslim Countries don't want these people either. They have been killing "Muslim Brotherhood" types for years.
