My favorite Campbell reference was in "The Way of the Wild Gander" (I believe it's that one, it's been over twenty-five years since I've read it). He was talking about "wound-lickers"...people who couldn't do anything in life because they were so paralyzed with the fear of getting hurt they couldn't act or move forward. They just lived in the past and constantly licked their old wounds, and nothing in their world ever changed.
