Actually, if the Catholic Church had co-opted the Protestant issues, and instituted the reforms they suggested, it's quite possible they would have won a total victory over the Protestants. It would have required some flexibility on their part, but wouldn't have required any change in the basics of their Faith.

Instead, they used Force: armies and Inquisitions. With a great deal of violence, and several nasty episodes of "ethnic cleansing" (like the French Huguenots, and the Spanish Jews), they only succeeded in re-conquering a small part of what they'd lost.

So, yes, the Pope should have listened to the grievences of the Dutch Street, instead of blessing Catholic armies sent to massacre them.
