<Mr Rumsfeld, who comes to teach a thing or two to 'old Europe', the Europe of democratic values, humanist Europe, the Europe of the Age of Enlightenment, personally I find that this hurts."

The Greeks felt the same way about the Romans.

If this becomes a pattern, we may end up expelling Benelux/France/Germany from NATO, leaving a dougnut-shaped loyal periphery. Very strange, to have Estonia, Slovenia, and Bulgaria backing U.S. adventures, while the core of the original NATO dissents.

U.N., Iraq Fail to Agree on Key Inspection Issues
Sunday, February 9, 2003; 7:45 PM
washingtonpost.com

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Feb. 9 -- The top U.N. arms experts said tonight that they were unable to reach agreement with Saddam Hussein's government on several key weapons issues they had traveled here to resolve in a bid to build support for continuing inspections.

The two chief U.N. inspectors, Hans Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei, failed to come away with the top three items on their wish list during meetings with high-level Iraqi officials on Saturday and today: significant amounts of new evidence about Iraq's past weapons programs, safety guarantees from Iraq for reconnaissance aircraft they want to fly over the country; and a high-level declaration criminalizing the production of nuclear, chemical or biological arms.

[.....]

Saadi said Iraq was trying to work out a compromise with the United Nations that would involve the inclusion of non-American aircraft, including French and Russian jets as well as unmanned German drones, in the reconnaissance patrols.

<"When one has to take a slap in the face such as the insulting remarks... by Mr Rumsfeld, who comes to teach a thing or two to 'old Europe', the Europe of democratic values, humanist Europe, the Europe of the Age of Enlightenment, personally I find that this hurts." >

Giggle... The Europe of Mussolini, Hitler and that Spanish fascist jerk, burning of witches at the stake, the dark ages, heresy, excommunication, pogroms, the Final Solution, eugenics, Lamark, socialism, communist revolution, Hungarian suppression, Balkan mayhem, multiple German attacks on neighbours [1870, 1915, 1939], the land of bureaucratic repression, Nanny-statism, kleptocracy, Papal infallibility, the Maginot Line and now 11% unemployment in the old Nazi villages. Humanism, democracy, freedom and enlightenment barely get a word in edgewise.

Hooray for olde Europa,
