France, Belgium Veto NATO Aid to Turkey
VOA News
10 Feb 2003, 08:56 UTC

NATO has called for an emergency meeting Monday, after France and Belgium vetoed a U.S. request to provide military support to Turkey in the event of a war in Iraq.

A NATO official says France and Belgium vetoed the proposal, shortly before a deadline for alliance members to formally register their objections. It is unclear if Germany joined France and Belgium is objecting to the move. All three countries oppose military action against Iraq at this time.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld earlier called the idea of a veto "inexcusable." Mr. Powell says it is time for NATO to rally around one of its members that may be put at risk in case of war.

The United States wants NATO to send early warning planes, (Patriot) air defense missiles and anti-chemical and biological warfare units to Turkey to protect it from any potential attacks from Iraq.

Turkey is expected to be a major staging area for any U.S.-led military action against Iraq.

I'm not so sure it's the "end of NATO as we know it"; I do believe it is the beginning of France and Germany showing just what type of "allies" they are to all other nations !

The more this unfolds, I'm left feeling that Germany and France no longer speak for Europe, NATO or the UN; only their self interests.

The simple fact is ... neither France nor Germany can stop the U.S. and Britain if a decision is made to move forward.

They can prove however, just what weak allies they are.

is this the end of NATO as we know it ?

We are going to see a lot of posts that this is due to the "Macho" behavior of this Admin. But I think it is going to be a structural change. NATO is just not as important any more. The very fact that it was enlarged so much weakened it. Pundits have been writing for years that this "Everybody in" philisophy was a mistake, but it just changed it to a mutual aid society for Europe that could keep us involved.

We are relocating our "Force Projection" out of Europe. Makes sense in the evolving World.

I think the countries in Europe that lined up with us last week are madder than hell at German, Belgium, and France over this. Look for a public reaction.

Chirac is going to be exposed as an even worse scoundrel than we suspect, IMO.
