I just started reading "Red River to Appomattox" by Foote, and God, it reads well! It is the third in his Civil War series, published in 1974. Starts with Grant showing up at the Southern Hotel in DC to take over the Union Armies in 1864. He does it in a "Narrative" style that makes it easier to absorb.

I never finished it...interesting but very dense prose and many, many pages.

I feel like I should give it another shot, though.

EDIT: In re-reading your post, I see that this probably is not the book you had in mind.
