My take is that the EU should be taking a much more unified stance on the Iraqi problem in order to support the UN, something in which the US has not been very interested.

I certainly don't see it that way at all. On the contrary, ironically, it's the US that is supporting the UN and attempting to prevent it from falling into utter and complete irrelevency. If the EU would take a more unified stance, France and Germany would have to come into line with the US position, as the majority of EU members SUPPORT the US position, publicly. If the goal is to support the UN, then certainly France, Germany, Russia, and China should shut up, and put up. 12 years and 18 UNSC resolutions on an openly defiant Iraq is enough. The UN is being destroyed by the nays, right before our eyes.
