Webcast delays.

A fellow from IR advised me that there was background noise on the archived version of the webcast from yesterday's shareholder meeting. They are trying to strip out the noise and hope to have the webcast up by tomorrow morning.

I have 15 pages of scrawled, virtually unreadable, handwritten notes on the meeting and may post a few highlights that I can read if people are interested.

As a preview, I would call your attention to Slide 28 from Dr. J's presentation. This is a new slide which shows how GSM1x could work with WCDMA. WCDMA would be used in the major cities, using the 3G spectrum. In the less populated areas, GSM voice would run on 2G spectrum. In the areas in between, GSM1x would offer 1x/1xEV-DO in 2G spectrum. Dr. Jacobs explained that this structure would allow the entire country to be covered much earlier than could be justified economically otherwise. As I recall, no specific country was identified as the target for this approach. I suppose it would work in Latin America and for China Mobile as well as Europe if they would ever allow 1x in the 2G spectrum.

I note that the Qualcomm speakers seem to be reluctant to grab that figure, preferring to say over 7 million.

I wonder why they changed....

The only number I have seen for Unicom in January was supplied by KDDI. If the 8.1 million number is accurate, it would represent a drop-off but still a decent rate of growth (800,000 per month).

I guess we'll know more on the 20th....at least for the listed portion of Unicom's network.

One thing that sort of bothers me....last year, Unicom seemed to be announcing everytime they added another million CDMA subscribers. I dont think that there has been an announcement for the 8 million mark. Hopefully, this just means they discontinued the practice.
