Cingular Deploys Initial E911 Phase II Network

Cingular Wireless has deployed its first Phase II capabilities for wireless enhanced 911 service, completing the deployment by major carriers of Phase II technology in metropolitan Houston's Greater Harris County 911 Emergency Network.

The deployment follows a struggle by Cingular and other GSM/GPRS carriers to settle on a technology for enabling Phase II. Cingular late last year suspended its shipments of a hybrid handset-network solution using enhanced observed time difference of arrival technology in favor of a network-based solution using TDOA.

Cingular's move later was followed by AT&T Wireless Services, which like Cingular had been fined by the FCC for missing Phase II capability deadlines.

Harris County officials say that with Cingular's launch, all major wireless carriers in the area offer Phase II capabilities.

Cingular originally deployed Phase I capabilities in the Greater Harris County network in May 2000.
