Mobile Phone Shipments Rise 2nd Straight Mo In Dec

nni.nikkei.co.jp

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Japan's domestic shipments of mobile phones jumped 27% in December from a year earlier to 3.961 million units, the second straight rise, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, or JEITA, said Thursday.

Sales were bolstered by healthy demand for advanced handsets such as those with built-in cameras.

Domestic shipments of mobile phones, including personal handyphone system, or PHS, handsets, rose 4.9% from November, marking the third consecutive rise.

Excluding PHS, shipments of mobile phones rose 32% on year to 3.892 million units in December, a 5.3% rise from November.

PHS shipments plummeted 56% from a year earlier to 69,000 units in December, marking 22 straight months of on-month decline, JEITA said.

For all 2002, domestic shipments of mobile phones plunged 20% from a year earlier to 40.528 million units.

JEITA also said the net increase in contracts for mobile phone services, excluding PHS services, was 705,400 in December, up 94% from a month earlier.

Total contracts for all mobile phone services were 79.082 million in December, up 0.9% from November. This total accounts for roughly 62% of the nation's population.

The net increase in contracts for mobile Internet services was 1.095 million in December, up 66% from the previous month.

A total of 15 manufacturers provide monthly statistics for regular cellphone shipments, including NEC Corp. (6701), Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., Toshiba Corp. (6502), Sony Corp. (6758), Hitachi Ltd. (6501) and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (6503).

slacker711, if your understanding is correct, a drop in royalties from about $11.15 (=$725/65 for FY02) to $7.85 (=$212/27 for F1Q03) per handset is alarming.
