The US has masterfully divided the old Europe from the New Europe, which is pro-American. This is part of the NATO evolution. Don't forget that Germany is not doing well under the new economic regime--getting the shaft for getting rid of the deutschemark. The strains on Europization are enormous.

European Unity is an Oxymoron unless of course, (as Goldbergh asserts) they are trying to determine the official standard for the circumference of a cucumber, or
if parmesan has to come from Parma.

In matters of substance, there is no unity in Europe
because there isnt the 'all for one, one for all'
spirit. This has been made clear by the lack of respect towards Turkey.

The way Germany and France's economy are going down the tubes, they won't have any trouble meeting their projected goals under the Kyoto Protocol. :>)
