OT: And I mean OT:

Moenmac,
There were two wars in Viet Nam. the French Indo-China war that ended in 1954. It was in this war that the US undermined the French effort to continue their rule of Viet Nam. The US supported a fellow by the name of NGO Dinh Diem, and when the French departed Viet Nam and a treaty had been agreed to in which the total of Viet Nam would have a free election, Diem cancelled the election because he knew that Ho Chi Minh( the communist leader in the North) would win the election. Bottomline...the US supported the Diem efforts to undermine France's control over Viet Nam. As for the Viet Nam war that WE fought in and lost....the French warned us NOT to intervenue in this region because it would be a lost cause. DeGaulle made numerous speechs to this issue...but did we listen? Yes...that is after 30,000+ US soldiers were killed in the rice patties.

You might want to do some research on Ngo Dinh Diem...a real interesting character that we propped up and that led to our later military efforts in the region. Another fascinating area of research would be the speech that DeGaulle gave on or about July 23, 1964. One thing that he said and that sticks out in my mind was his comments that went something like this...."peace must be made and we must return to what was agreed on 10-12 years ago. ..No foreign power should interven in any way in the affairs of THESE UNFORTUNATE countries."

He then went on to say that even with the US's great might and power, they should stay out of the region. Any intrusion "could" lead to a major upheaval in the region.

Hummmm! Seems the French gave us some good words of advise on this occasion....and now they are doing it again.
