He said he understood what Germany was doing; that Turkey did not take personal offense; however, he felt it was still incumbent upon Turkey to protect its interests That interview was after the meeting had broken up. I am not so sure Turkey knew for sure what the reasons were before that special meeting. Secondly, it is quite possible Rummy pushed Turkey to call the meeting, so Rummy could make a big deal of it to tweak Germany, France and Belgium. Rumsfield intended to intimidate Germany into cooperating...it backfired very badly. Do you understand......they applauded Villepin [the ambassador from France] after he spoke at the Sec. Council yesterday. You are not allowed to applaud in the Sec. Council. They need to put Rummy as you call him into a back office; he's a lose cannon. And, I think Rummy is laying the groundwork for realigning NATO, or at least troops in NATO, and he wants Congress and the American people to be on his side. Yeah, right........you still are dreaming that Bush has this under control. You still don't see it......in European eyes GW has already taken the fall. The events of the past few weeks are not news to the Europeans......they have been stewing for the past three months at least. They have been going on for far longer than that. When did Schroeder first become chancellor. He ran against Gw. then. I agreed they want GW to take the fall. They couldn't pull it off this time, that is why Schroeder backed down. In the words of a former president........read my lips......Schroeder did not fall. I think they will try again. Rummy is no dummy either, and I think he will act, before they can set Gw up again, and force negotiations on the future of NATO. Rummy is arrogant and inappropriate......they will send Powell but I think it may be too late. They will kiss and make up but the damage has been done. But now Rummy is in a stronger bargaining position. I believe that you are reading the situation wrongly but things are fluid so we shall see.Again, I don't think that's true......not from the reports I've read. Even Powell is backing away from his original position on this issue. Not so. Powell mentioned that he had new evidence of Al qaeda connections this morning, and he said he would present it to the council next week, if asked. I heard later, that it was confirmed last wk. that 8 members of the Egyptian wing of Al qaeda are in Bagdhad. That's news to me........we'll have to see. ted
