Passionate Liberalism:
Here's a joke that writes itself: The Clinton Presidential Center is looking for interns. Atop the application brochure is a quote from a former intern--no, not the portly pepperpot but one Jean-Paul Tremblay, who boasts of his "passionate interest in making a difference." The brochure also promises prospective interns "a unique opportunity for . . . meaningful service" and quotes the center's director of operations, Hannah Richert, as saying: "In this environment, each intern is vitally important."

Hi D. Long; Re: "Wrong, Carl. You're assuming we're wrong, and they're right."

No, you missed the point of my allegory. Even if you assume that you're the one that always knows best, and that you're the one that is as pure in deed and as noble in motive as Jesus Christ, if you try to use naked force to get what you want, you will still end up sleeping alone on the couch.

Humans by their nature are not 100% rational. Even if you make the wild jump of assuming that your own thought processes are perfectly rational (and therefore probably not human), you cannot make this assumption about other people. But the fact is that you must take into account their beliefs whether you agree with them or not.

Maybe we can agree that abortion is wrong and that doctors that perform it are unpunished murderers. We can convince ourselves that this is true, and we can even go around and kill a few doctors. In our hearts we know that we are right and they are wrong, but they still hunt us down and put us in jail.

Alternatively, maybe we can agree that abortion is every woman's right, and that we should become heroes and become abortion doctors. We can convince ourselves that we are right, but when the "pro life" nut cases shoot us down we will still bleed.

You do not live in a world of rational actors. What you live in, is a world filled with fools with guns. This is a fact that you already take into account constantly in your personal life.

-- Carl

>Iraq is in material breach, according to the conditions everyone agreed upon in 1441, but now everyone wants to pretend that the moon is made of blue cheese. Time to jump the lunatic asylum.<

If I misplace my keys, I look in the obvious places first, then in all the places I can think of, and probably ask other family members to help in the hunt. If the keys still don't show up, one of the conclusions I NEVER come to is that maybe I never really had keys in the first place. Doesn't even cross my mind.
The U.S. destroys chemical weapons on an island in the Pacific. It's a relatively high tech process as one might expect in handling large quantities of hazardous material. There are lots of safe guards in place so as not to kill all the people working there, or badly contaminate the environment. I find the idea that Iraq disposed of many TONS of poisons (by flushing them down the toilet? Hiring David Cooperfield to "disappear" them?) without ANY records of the actual process or ANY of the support functions that such an operation would entail or ANY of the personnel records-job descriptions, payroll, health records, or ANY of the logistical records such as shipping records or location of the end products, or the identification of an actual place where all this occured lacks credibility.

>And Iraq promised to establish a commission to hunt for any WMD that they haven't declared already.
Saddam's inner council must have been laughing until the tears rolled out of the corners of their eyes, rolling around holding their sides because laughing so hard made them hurt.<

I'd be surprised if there was a dry pair of pants in the room.

Keep up the good work Nadine, Cobalt Blue, Lindy Bill (and many others). There is a lot of "magical thinking" floating around these days.
