Listen, its perfectly legitimate for nation states to act in their own self-interest.....the U.S. does it, everyone does it...that is the responsibility of governments (to do what's in the best interest of their people- or what they THINK is in their best interest-g)

What do we have in common (culturally, politically, religous, world view) with ally Saudi Arabia? We are both acting in self-interest there fer sure- viewed purely as a friendship, its pretty hypocritical

If Russia is our ally, its because its in their self-interest. If they are against us on Iraq, (because they view) its against their self-interest (does necessarily mean financial, but often does)

<<Maybe it was just growing up in the 80's that is doing that to me :)>>

Yah, that and the fact Putin was a top KGB official for years....

I think they (the Russians) will try, but Saddam won't accept. I also think we're going in with or without ANYONE else, it'll be painted as a matter of U.S. domestic security, period. Ideally, we'd just lay out an ultimatum (outside of the U.N.) with a hard deadline, he turns it down, and we declare war on Iraq and leave it at that. The major benefit of this approach is that we get to keep all the goodies (oil) as war reparations and to find the occupation trust account. The downside of this approach is obvious, although dismantling NATO may not be all bad, it allows us to greatly decrease the size and cost of the standing military deployed in Europe. Let the Frenchies and the Krauts fend for themselves (and pay for it) and see how they like it.
