We have Republics in the West, not Democracies, in the strict sense

Please help me understand the difference.

I come from India, a nation that is democratic since 1947, but declared itself as a republic in 1951. Never had a good answer on that one either. (Jan 26 is Republic Day, Apr 15 is Independance day in India).
