Lone Ranger - I see your point, but moral and humanitarian issues aside, do you really think that fanatical Muslims (or most any other fanatic group) can really be wiped out "one nation at a time"? That seems very naive in my view. Unilateral US military action posses a grave danger of alienating millions of centrist Muslims who will cross over to fervent anti-Americanism with what most of the world will perceive as US aggression on their soil. Believe me, I'm not defending Saddam and his ilk, but what is the plan after we bomb the crap outta them? To have a US General oversee Iraq as it rebuilds into a democratic nation state? That just isn't feasible in the present political climate, not by a longshot. Now look at what Mcarthur did with Hirohito in Japan, he kept an Asian on the throne and brokered the deal so that face could be saved even as they rolled over like puppy dogs. Where is the statesmanship and diplomacy now? I thought that's why Powell was onboard, a strong well-spoken black man who might have a shot of being listened to by Muslims. But what do they do, they force him to be a hardliner, and put him in a position that seems to preclude negotiation and compromise. It just doesn't add up from any point of view, liberal, conservative, or otherwise. Either they're complete fools (which I don't believe) or there's a whole bunch of stuff we don't know about and they don't want us to know about. Either way, I don't like it one bit!
