Last time, the Iraqi army was caught in the desert in retreat from Kuwait,

Much of the Iraqi army was deployed along Kuwait's southern border. Most of them surrendered there. Iraqi units not stationed on the Saudi front did retreat from Kuwait and were shot up pretty badly during the process. I think every Iraqi who surrendered survived the war. I wonder if Iraqis will remember that?

which it had invaded because it had been told by the U.S. earlier that the U.S. would not intervene in "domestic matters."

You don't think Saddam intended to invade till then? People in the West misread Saddam in 1990. They mis-interpreted his problem with Kuwait as a border dispute. Many people are still mis-interpreting his intentions and capacity for violence.

Saddam Hussein wanted to annex it, though his word for annexation was to arrange a mutually agreeable settlement of a border dispute.
When Ambassador April Glaspie arrived, Saddam asked her what was the United States policy or opinion concerning Kuwait.
She told him her country had no opinion on Arab-Arab conflicts, "like your border disagreement with Kuwait", but the United States would never accept a settlement achieved by other than peaceful means.
That was all there was to the interview. Washington checked with other Arab leaders who agreed with the White House that Saddam was almost certainly trying to get his way by blackmail and other forms of pressure on Kuwait.
A check with British intelligence - always the most knowledgeable about Middle Eastern affairs - received the response that Saddam was undoubtedly bluffing.
Well nobody had long to wait to see that they'd all been dead wrong and poor Ambassador Glaspie was taunted for a time with the charge that she had more or less given Saddam the cue, the high sign, to do whatever he wanted.

Wow, sounds like the Iraqis are really ready for war!

HUSSEIN BRIEFED ABOUT DRAFT DODGER INDOCTRINATION & OTHER ENCOURAGING REPORTS FROM THE FIELD
C-SPAN | 1/29/03 | Sadaam & his Generals via Translator

Posted on 01/29/2003 10:03 PM PST by Steven W.

You may have seen news clips of Sadaam Hussein today conducting a meeting with all of his generals of which all the media seemed to cover similarly ala "today Sadaam had more harsh words for the United States".
Has anybody actually seen much of this? Can I believe what I was seeing? I caught a few minutes of this "meeting" (propaganda) on C-SPAN and almost died laughing at what I was witnessing. Seriously, from what I saw, even the folks at SNL couldn't be this funny - you just can't make stuff like this up. Here's some examples of what I was actuually seeing and hearing:
First, to set the stage, picture Sadaam at the head of a long table surrounded by all of his top generals, each appearing so tepid as though at any minute they expect him to explode, pull out his gun and start shooting, while Sadaam sits there, jovially puffing on a cigar. This telecast to the Iraqi people lasted all the way around the table as each gives a briefing of their preparations for the upcoming battle.
The one general I was particularly able to catch was explaining how he, along with their Defense Ministry, was responsible for recruiting all of the troops who ran away the last time, particularly all "the draft dodgers". The general went on to assure Sadaam that all the troops had been rounded up and have been undergoing several "weeks of indoctrination, day and night", and were now certainly ready from their battle training.
Another general explained how many miles he had each brigade running up to three times or more a day, but that he'd stopped the evening runs because the men were getting really tired and hadn't had a vacation. Sadaam told him (the general) that he (Sadaam), too, could be out there running with the men and, if he were to join them, they'd run longer, farther than they ever had before, running until they caught "them", but then went on that unfortunately he wouldn't actually be joining them this time but he was confident they wouldn't need him, as all the generals nodded approvingly and complimented Sadaam on his greatness at running.
Another general respectfully explained how his troops don't have any food to eat so they are frequently guests at poor peoples' houses who, out of generosity and great love for Sadaam and his troops, graciously open their houses to the soldiers and prepare food for them, no matter how many there are, "two guests, four guests", they'll feed all his soldiers. In fact, the general joked, one group of his soldiers were being fed by poor peasants who didn't have any food at all to give to them so the father went out and slaughtered the family's horse and prepared it for them. The general explains that when his troops were finished & went to leave, they demanded the family give them their horse, too, and, to their surprise, they were told they couldn't because, the soldiers learned, they'd just eaten him. Sadaam and the other generals enjoyed a great laugh over this. Then the general went on that this kind of gratitude shown by the people of Iraq demonstrated the great esteem in which he's held and praised his great work for Allah.
