Once he gets them, he's a real problem. Better to nip it in the butt sooner rather than later...and you get the bonus of freeing a bunch of people at the same time! You make the solutions so black or white......either we take him out or we ignore him. I think there is a third alternative which is to contain him. Even with a lapse of inspections but with sanctions still in place, its not looking like Saddam has amassed a huge cache of WMD. In a short time, I think we will know if this is right. You always cast Al Qaeda and Iraq as one or the other. I see no reason to assume that is the case. We already did most of the damage we could via direct military in Afghanistan. The military is free to do other things now (ie Iraq). The fight against Al Qaeda is mostly an undercover affair now. Yes, and its not going well. I sense that the Bush administration is frustrated with the process of capturing al Qaeda.......its not politically beneficial by Karl Rove's standards and they are not committing the resources and more importantly, the focus that it deserves. In addition, Rumsfield has this pet theory that the military can do more with less and has implemented that theory in Afghanistan. Understandably, the military leaders over there are complaining that his theory is hurting their results. I am all for reducing the military but I don't think an important arena like Afghanistan and the al Qaeda is where we should be experimenting. There was a bust of an Al Qaeda cell in some backwater country on the news just this week. I think it's a good bet that the CIA (or some other allied intelligence service) had something to do with it. The fight continues, it's just not as blatant or using the same people. Frankly, I think foreign gov'ts have been more effective in tracking down al Qaeda than we have. The gov't has estimated that there are at least 300 sleepers in this country [others say there are more than that] and the last time we picked up anyone was sometime last year.....the guys in Buffalo, NY. I don't see the effort being made to corral al Qaeda. ted
