What many people don't realize about the settlements is that they are on vacant land in occupied territories, where building permits were denied to the Palestinians but granted to the settlers.

There is a famous civil rights case that took place in Mississippi or one of the other southern states back in the 60's, when black contractors were denied building permits, but white contractors got them routinely. There is also a fair housing law in the U.S. that prohibits excluding anyone from buying a house in a particular neighborhood. My point is that the actions of the Israelis would be seen as totally unconstitutional if they tried these stunts in the U.S.
