"That's not rational. Bravery has nothing to do with it."

It is rational and based on principle. Life is worth living and dieing is worth dieing. Life is worth living if it is based on living for principles that you believe in. If you believe that these principles are worthy ideals that transcend substantive materialism, then they are worthy of risking (or out and out sacrificing) one's life for them as well.

Fighting for justice or to correct injustice is a worthy cause. I assure you that freeing your sister from the hands of a torturing terrorist would be a worthy cause that many would be willing to stand up for, to fight and if necessary, to die for.

I am at a loss to see how that is irrational. Or if my dying in the process would leave you with:

"And if you went anyway and she were saved but you and four of your buddies died in the process, I still could never forgive myself."

It is not a matter of economics...or how dear the person being rescued is. I would feel the same if it were a senator or the sister of a person I have never met, or a harlet from desolation row.

"You don't give up five lives to save one, no matter how dear that one is to you.

It is a matter of standing against injustice and for a just humanity...period. It is one of the purposes of living that makes life worth living...for some of us.

It would be cowardly of me to take the position that it is ok for Saddam to lop the heads off of women (suspected of voicing their opinions about dress codes) in the market place as a demonstration...with the explanation that as its only 5 per year, and my family is not being cut at all. Where we accept that he does anything to one of them, he virtually inflicts the same harm to the whole of the soul of humankind.
