any number minus the sum of its digits is a number divisible by 9. All of the numbers divisible by 9 have the same symbol. Simple, but made complex looking by the size of the matrix.

the symbols for 81, 72, 63, 54, 45, 36, 27 18 and 9 are the same (although they all change each time you click on 'try again')

regardless of what pair you start with, the answer will ALWAYS be one of the above numbers.
