OT and OCD correction to my last OT Post.
Poor sentence structure re <<home ground >>. I actually do know that Stalingrad, now Volgograd, was Russia's home turf and what I meant to say is <<Russia's home ground advantage>>

Sorry, but I had to do that.

Re: Stalingrad. Germany was at its peak of strength as it began the Russian campaign but didn't anticipate the degree of cold weather that eventually helped defeat Germany. The Russians, who didn't like Stalin that much, still went to extreme sacrifices to stop the Germans. That is why there is a parallel with Iraq. You have a leader in Iraq that no one likes, and you have a city, Baghdad, full of ancient and historic buildings, where destruction of these buildings by U.S. attack would alienate the entire Iraqi population. Additionally, you have a city that would be difficult for large vehicles to traverse, making it easier for the Iraqis to defend themselves in small conclaves that could be accessed only by foot soldiers. Makes any intruder subject to sniper fire, or worse, biological attack, even if that means the killing of many Iraqis who happen to be in the neighborhood.

Many Iraqis and other Muslims believe that the real priority of the U.S. is not to remove a despot but to take control of the second richest oil fields in the world. To assume that a war would be won quickly is an assumption that someone who has worked and studied in that area would probably not make.

Let's not forget the most ominous geopolitical situation out there. It's not the Middle East, it is North Korea, and by osmosis it's best friend China, who incidentally has greatly assisted the nuclear program of Pakistan, estimated to have about 50-60 nuclear weapons now and growing each year. (India has a few more, also in a nuclear arms race)

Our government wants the Middle East to be forefront, and for Red Asia to be ignored. It will increasingly be too hard to ignore.
