Getting alone is not the issue. I was referring to the economic burden the newscomers will be on the existing members of the EU - take a look at how much money had to be funnelled into Greece and Portugal to raise them up to EU standards. Most of these ex-Soviet countries are in far worse shape than Greece ever was.

So my question was why, from an economic point of view, was the EU enlargement desirable? I am not sure I have seen a real answer to this question yet.
