That's precisely what war is, and always has been, about since the day the first caveman clubbed the second caveman to get his cavewoman away from him.

Its not about who lives or who dies as a way to keep score. It is about who wins and who dies in terms of the practical impact of the war. Its better for your side if less of your people die. It doesn't have quite the negative practical impact for your side if a lot of your enemies die...

A war might be fought for noble purposes but it is itself a brutal thing. Its about imposing your will on the enemy. One way to do that is to kill a lot of them. Then your enemy is weaker in numbers and probably in morale.

If you can impose your will without killing a lot of the enemy that is probably a good thing, but some killing can't be avoided (other wise it wouldn't be called a war), and if X amount are to die the president of the US should try to see to it that a very small % of X are Americans.
