I am not trying to blame the farmer but subsidies have caused a lot of marginal land to go into production. Where I grew up most of the land was very marginal and even with subsidies could not be economically sustained. It is a tragedy for that area as many of its' towns are now wastelands. But then the greater tragedy is that the marginal land was ever farmed in the first place.
