I just got off the phone with an Arab American friend of mine named Mohammed. He told me he got a call from a terrorist guy claiming to Osama Bin Laudin (caller ID placed the guy in Arizona). The guy, who obviously did not know he was talking to an Arab, had a very fakey accent and said he was going to blow my friend up. We laughed at the corn ball prank but also got kind of pinged by the thought that this is some sort of attempt to increase fear and escalate hate against Arabs.

But we are perceiving that the bad boy is also harming us, either immediately or in the near future.

We may be right, we may be wrong.

But here's an example. Your neighbor has just obtained a machine gun and is shooting off rounds in his back yard every evening, just spraying the bullets around willy-nilly, having a blast. The bullets come within a few feet of your house. None have hit it yet, and none have hit your children yet, but several have hit your tree house, one clipped a branch off the tree next to your house, and you are in legitimate fear. The police won't step in until he actually hits somebody. The neighbors don't want you taking action because they fear he will set off a grenade if his machine gun is taken away.

So, do you just do nothing but wait for him to kill you, your wife, or one of your children
