Petz,

Right. 2 way Opteron will be a killer server. I would like to see it make it into workstations too, and a single processor Opteron for high en desktop.

The total memory bandwidth for a single Opteron will be 666 MHz x 8 bytes in April, effectively equivalent to the P4, given the P4's smaller L2 cache, its penchant for doing unnecessary memory reads, and the P4's longer first-access penalties (latency). But compare 2-way systems, and the Opteron system's memory bandwidth doubles while the P4's doesn't budge.

Actually, the more I think to it, the more I wonder if Hammer wouldn't have made a perfect couple with 9.6GB/s Quad channel Rambus!!!

Dear Joe:

What is to stop AMD from qualifying DDR-400 (PC3200) or even DDR-466 (PC3700)? It uses the same electrical and command interfaces but, at a higher speed. So if DDR-400 is available, it is just a quick retest to support it with no more than a BIOS change at most. Thus a single Opteron with dual DDR will have the same bandwidth (and possibly more) with much lower latency and larger sizes. Of course 2 way and up will blow away all comers.
