"I take it that is what you meant."

Yikes! Nope, I was talking about OTHER alliance members whom have no personal and nationalistic world ambitions, but simply try to keep out of the way of 65-foot boats bearing down on them!

"I say the next time the Germans want to eat the French, we let them. You Canadians OK with that?"

We also deal with the French Nationalistic ambitions and their fear and insecurity as regards a culture being assimilated by the world. Groups with such cultural agendas informing all other issues do tend to be somewhat intractable and favored with an overriding bias.

"That's why they resent the US so much"

I doubt it is that. They are simply an ambitious Nation.

"Kick them out of NATO and let them take care of themselves"

France represents a large slice of world culture and history. Many of histories greatest men and women pursued their paths of discovery in the intellectual atmosphere of Paris. I hope there will always be a Paris...

"Nuts. Their clear intent is to prevent those alliances from being forged"

That is what I said. It forces the US to go the extra mile to find a way to persuade others to an awareness that their MUTUAL needs are somehow being accomodated--not just frightened obedience...but sincere COOPERATION.

"Not applicable. That other boat did have right of way under the racing rules."

My intended point was that being in the "right" in "principle" does not automatically entail a lack of responsibility from either moral or pragmatic consideration. Whether or not the 65 foot boat has the right of way has little to do with the myriad of choices and responsibilities available to it. I am not surprised, however, to know that you were the boat in the wrong! :-)
