Michael,
Hope you are right. Please keep in mind that imposed democracy in germany and japan required extended occupation. Thos countries had been soundly defeated and defanged. Post saddam iraq under a military occupation, imposing democracy and democracy that works in a sea of terror and reactionary regimes. I hope you are right. mike

Now just a dang minute Mike, I don't think it's legal to include so much common sense in one Post here.
It's, so, like Foreign to the usual stuff.
I thought we were supposed to be estimating casualties from a war that hasn't happened yet, or predicting whether Muslims will destroy our entire country if the Democrats elect a man with a name like "Leiberman" or a woman (Allah forbid) as our President. What will they think of us then?
Perhaps we should be thinking appeasement here, meet them half way, start wearing Muslim headwear, Katahs and such.
Then when they attack France instead of us, we can say that we did our part, and ask why didn't they try a little diplomacy too.

Michael,

Great post, thank you.

Democratic change will do more to alleviate terrorism worldwide then a thousand Tomahawk missiles long term. We need only get the ball rolling, and keep it rolling with the right nudge here-and-there.

And the defeatism and cynicism of the anti-war people will not help one person nor prevent one terror attack.

Paul

<There has never been a major war between two democratic nations>

1. U.S. vs. Confederacy (are you going to call the Confederacy undemocratic because blacks couldn't vote, or the North undemocratic because women couldn't vote?)
2. WWII (remember, Hitler came to power by winning a free and fair election. OK, Germany wasn't a democracy by 1939, but Hitler had made very clear what his intentions were, when the German people voted for him in 1932)
3. the War of 1812 was a war between the two most democratic nations on earth at the time.
