Since in this instance the conservative and neoconservative views diverge on what to do once the invasion is over, the aftermath of the war should be interesting...

Really. Interesting that Scooter Libby's name is never mentioned. (Remember how much publicity Bill Kristol got in the same job.) Is he publicity-shy?

Thus, the PNAC crowd is in favor of taking on a big imperial burdening,

So now creating the conditions where democratic reforms, free press, and economic opportunity for all is to be referred to as "imperialism"??

My.. how the times "they be a changin".. Use to be "imperialism" was the conquest of territory for the purpose of extracting resources and subjugating the population to the will of an empire... :0)

TB: I've been doing a lot more background on the complete list of PNACers, rather than the eight or so most prominent, so I have been turning up a broader spectrum of scholarship than I would have guessed.

The oldest politicos in the group do seem to be Rumsfeld and his assistant, Cheney, who (I think) first appeared in executive functions in Nixon's Office of Economic Opportunity circa 1970. With the weight of their executive-level service since, I'd guessed they were the lead conservatives in the group and within this administration.

But Bush the Elder has been around the halls of power as long and all have successfully outlasted peers who exited due to various scandals within the Nixon and Reagan admins.

Being cynical and liberal, I also note that the media guy leading the touting of the Al Qaida/Hussein link, Safire, tracks back to his work with Nixon, so I suspect the three share very common philosophies.

I was taken by surprise by Rumsfeld's strident language towards Old Europe. Have I paid insufficient attention in the past or is it unusual for cabinet members to be granted such a long leash to be that outspoken?

Knowing the longheld disdain some conservatives have held towards the existence of the UN, is it conceivable that there's an ulterior strategy at work here? Is part of the plan to set up situations that draw opposition precisely to discredit the UN, with the intent of ending our participation entirely?

I'm starting to think Rummy & Cheney believe the US is capable of being a solo act and they're doing their best to make that happen.

Thanks for your input.

Ok, I had to look it up. I assume this is the PNAC you refer to: newamericancentury.org The reading list at newamericancentury.org turns up a pretty tight list of known names, along with one Gary Schmitt, who doesn't seem to have been mentioned much locally. Except for an old pointer from stockman_scott to this post on the W thread, #reply-17998586 . Round up the usual suspects there, it seems.

Recently, a group known as Project for a New American Century (PNAC) sent a letter urging President Bush to punish not only Iraq but also Lebanon, Syria, Iran and the Palestinian Authority. This group includes people who hold important positions in the Bush administration, including Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, Vice-President Dick Cheney's chief of staff Lewis Libby, top Bush aide Elliott Abrams, Defence Under secretary Douglas Feith, Defence Policy Board chief Richard Perle, and Florida Governor Jeb Bush, the president's brother.

There was also a passing reference to Schmitt in an LA Times story some other equally maligned clown posted here, #reply-17996027 .
