We want the same things then, UN support for war.

I don't think Iraq is important enough to jeopardize our relationships with the rest of the world. And the reason the rest of the world doesn't agree with us is that they don't see Iraq as much of a threat either. Unlike Germany, Saddam does not have an industrialized population behind him. He rules by fear and intimidation. He's lost a good chunk of his country to the Kurds. He is being bombed along two no-fly zones by bombers. The imports to the country are limited. And this country is like 30's Germany?

Not

If he had a nuke he wouldn't use it on us, unless of course he had nothing left to lose- like, for instance, we invade Iraq with the purpose of killing him. He isn't stupid. I wish we hadn't been stupid, but we were. Ratcheting up the rhetoric against Saddam before we had a pot to piss in was stupid. Bush backed himself into a corner, now he's trying to crawl out of it, gracefully. At the moment he looks like a tapdancing crab. He wants to walk away from what he's said, but he has to do it sideways.

The issue of Saddam probably looked like a good issue to divert attention from the pesky Al Qaedans- who just aren't that easy to catch. At least Iraq stays in one place. unfortunately attacking Iraq does nothing to promote safety in the US (imo), and will probably do a lot to heighten tensions (it already has heighted tensions with the rest of the world- including our "allies"), and fuel the Muslim zealots out there.
