Secondly, the Marshall plan and WWII cost far more than that in todays terms. And the Marshall plan probably was our greatest investment as a nation; even if Europe weaseled out of repaying us. Why would you think the middle east won't be worth it, if demcracy works.

We are not going to be making the kind of expenditures in the Middle East we made under the Marshall Plan. We'll go in, spend what it takes to win the war, but there is no reason we would need to spend the kind of money we did after WWII.

(1) Iraq has plenty of money of its own, and the Iraqi people are being deprived of it now. They will be pleased to use their own money for something other than building Saddam Palces.

(2) The war will be minimally destructive. We have the weapons systems to be able to win the war without destroying the infrastructure.
