When you think of the responsibility those folks have, and the access to staffwork, information, and so forth, that's a really pathetic comment, no?

If you don't like this bunch, go back 50, 100, 150, years. They would tell you that being an "Expert" does not get them reelected, and they are right. They figure they can hire all the "Expert" boys they want when they need them. The contempt is mutual.

I am reading "Boy Genius," the Bio on Rove, whenever I hit the lounge chair at Borders this week. Written by Lou Dubose, Jan Reid, Carl M. Cannon, and a couple of other people who added sneers whenever the Authors were running short of them. Lou Dubose co-writes books with Molly Ivins, so that should tell you where he is coming from.

But it is interesting, if you want to see how a real "Dweeb" of a kid from Colorado can make good in Texas Politics. He "made his bones" as a Direct Mail expert. He took advantage of the fact the Republicans in Texas could pick up the unhappy Dem Conservatives, Conservative Chicanos, and the out of state Republicans move ins. In the last twenty years, the state has gone from solidly Dem to a "Rock Ribbed" Republican enclave. The biggest shock was when he beat Ann Richards with Bush in '94.

What makes if especially delicious is to think of the 20 years of slow, painful agony Molly Ivins has gone through. ">)

But there's little question in my mind that the discussion here, for example (at least when it's at its best, not the juvenile name-calling stuff), is more intellectually serious than most of what occurs in Congress.
