The contempt is mutual.

oh, absolutely, I'm sure it is. The only problem is that although getting into and staying in office is crucial for them, it's what they do once they're there that is crucial for all of us. So it would be nice if some of them actually bothered to think seriously a bit about how to further the national interest when handling actual substantive issues, rather than making all their decisions on the basis of lobbying, fundraising, special interest group pressures, etc. Go back to that letter of D'Iulio's: in the past there was often an attempt to balance substance and politics, or at least let both have their say. All too often today, especially in Congress, it's 100% the latter. Shame.

I am reading "Boy Genius," the Bio on Rove, whenever I hit the lounge chair at Borders this week.

It will, of course, surprise you no end to know I've got it on reserve at the local library.

What makes if especially delicious is to think of the 20 years of slow, painful agony Molly Ivins has gone through. ">)

Not even close. If you are a serious Texas liberal Dem, as Molly certainly is, it's been more like 30 to 40 years since Yarborough was in the Senate. And before that, LBJ tore the guts out of the liberal wing of the state Dem party.
