Jim, Europe can be depended on to resist changing to a CDMA based technology at almost any cost, and particularly now, after the way the Europeans have been treated on numerous political issues (environmental and Middle East). However, there is probably a point where even the most stubborn Europeans would have to change, especially if major countries like India and China moved to 100% CDMA for data communications. At some point, the Europeans would have to offer GSM phones that were compatible with CDMA type data access. The GSM 1X scenario looks the most likely to me.
