<Didja ever notice that you can persuade the best of people to do horrible things if you convince them it is for the "Common Good?" >

Look Lindy, just because it's for the Common Good that we sort our Saddam, Uday, Qusay and Iraq, doesn't mean that the collateral damage of dead women, children, men and property is a horrible thing.

The end justifies the means Lindy. We have to break a few eggs to make an omelette and we are going to make an omelette in Iraq. It's for the common good - everyone will have some omelette to eat. Cooked in oil for added flavour [though as the Spanish cooking oil disaster showed, one needs to select cooking oil carefully].

The whole world, including Iraq [other than those collaterally damaged and those who dare to try to defend themselves and fend off the invaders], will be better off.

Defeat of Saddam is for the Common Good.

>>That's Human Nature, John.<<

True. And I am starting to wonder whether this is also human nature:

Conservatives say, "everybody's biased."
Liberals say, "no, we're not biased, it's you guys."

Because we keep having the same argument over and over and over again.

Is there a liberal on the thread who agrees with the statement "everybody's biased"? Anybody?

(Or is JohnM the only person who isn't biased?)(Him and the New York Times.);^)

That's Human Nature, John.

You just don't know how good it makes me feel to know I'm in the presence of such an august figure, one who genuinely knows what "human nature" is.

Bought the book on Karl Rove today at Barnes & Nobles. Had to go there to buy a Newark map. I had to take my wife to the Newark train station on Thursday to catch a train for Philly and an academic conference there. What a disaster of a city. Construction that, I'm convinced, was in the same place, when I made that same trip about 8 years ago.

At any rate, the ten year old map I had wouldn't work, so it gave me a good excuse to hit B&N before going back to pick her up tomorrow.

Also picked up the latest copy of Harper's to read the latest excerpt from Jonathan Schell's book to come out late spring.

Also just finished Linda Fairstein's new one, Bone Vault. If the Met and/or the Natural History Museum interest you, you will like it.
