I guess you missed all the parts about how terror attacks would probably increase if we back out and all of the other negative international consequences

I read it. It is far fetched, unsupported speculation. What is supported by real evidence is the animosity that Americans have earned complements of this policy, and the terrific recruiting tool this war has been said to represents to the very terrorists we are trying to keep at bay.

Even if you do focus on that one paragraph, why do you think he would be weakened?

Well, the author is predicting the reaction of Bush's political party and hints at an outcome in the 2004 election. I personally also believe this. Why? Because he will have lost face with his party, and has frightened non partisans irriversably. Even if he backs off of Iraq, everyone now believes he is capable of unspeakable things...like pre-emption and nuclear strikes. Comon...this is a scary guy...surrounded by ideologues and an unbelievable military machine.

This is not a 'wag the dog' situation.

Maybe it didn't start that way...but it has scope krept to that. And actually I don't really believe this either. Rummy, Wolfie, Pearle, Armitage and others wrote to Clinton urging war in Iraq in 1998. Bush has been manipulated into this situation and he can't back off anymore.

Even if you do focus on that one paragraph, why do you think he would be weakened? Because all of his supporters that can clearly see the need for the war would be left hanging. Those supporters are a good 50% + of the populace, so what makes him wrong to follow that when coupled with the national security issues?

When he goes into war without the UN, that percentage will be significantly lower.
