Actually, the U.N. really is irrelevant. The only reason why people prefer us to get "authorization" before attacking is because most people still want the U.N. to see things our way.

Assuming the war is quick and relatively light in casualties, the percentage supporting the war in hindsight will be significantly higher. This can change on a moment's notice if the body bags start piling up. And you can bet the Dems and the media will start focusing very closely on the death toll, and not just for the humanity of it.
