jim:

This might interest you. I had read the following Moshe Dyan quotes about the tractor provocation before somewhere but this is the only reference I can find through google.

<<"First, Israel did not respond, it practically attacked Egypt and Syria through provocation. About Golan, for example, Moshe Dyan wrote, “We would send a tractor to plow some area where it wasn’t possible to do anything, in the demilitarized area, and knew in advance the Syrians would start to shoot. If they didn’t shoot, we would tell the tractor to advance further, until in the end the Syrians would get annoyed and shoot. And then we would use artillery and later the air force…">>

Re: "Oh, and a footnote of my own, it is in part about oil and guess what? We need it. Saudi Arabia has a lot more than the camel boy."

We all need it and if it wasn't for the sanctions Iraq would have been exporting much more than it is allowed to and the price would be less than $20. The winners in this game have been and continue to be the people who put President Bush in power IMHO.

The present situation seems to me to possibly be a game of brinkmanship which is being overplayed.

stockman_scotts reference dawn.com doesn't only speak for Moslems who see a betrayal of what were thought to be American values it also speaks for many in Europe, Canada and elsewhere. In Britain, with 1.5 million Moslems, if there is a war there will be widespread support for the troops but not the war and at a possible cost in the future which might make the IRA attacks in the past seem like child's play.

Jim ,what about the suez crisis when isreal joined with france and england to invade egypt in 1954?what about the the thought that if it were not for our need to have cheap oil we would not be involved in the middle east.what about the idea that 200 years ago democracy was looked upon as something akin to a plaque, something that needed to be quarenteened?
I would be happy to pay 4$ a gallon if that were the price not tobe dependeant on someone else.Sit back and look at how much america wastes and pollutes.Did you ever stop to consider how rampant consumerism is an offence to the ideals of God and our founding fathers? In the eyes of the world we are the incarnation of sloth, waste and greed. It is time we stands on our own two feet without our middle east oil fix.Its time we rediscover the ideals of our fore fathers, self sufficiency is real independence.

Bravo ! Dr. Jim Black...

It absolutely escapes me, how people can be so niave.

re: International Law & the UN

Saddam & Iraq have defied now 17 UN resolutions.

Saddam broke International Law with a brutal invasion of Kuwait and when he used chemical and biological weapons on his own citizens and when he lobbed Scud Missles into Israel.

Where are the Feminists & Social Liberals on the human rights violations, the tortures, the human-bio experiements, the treatment of women and the mass murders committed by Saddam and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan ?

Where were the Tree-hugging Eco-freaks when he lit Kuwait's Oil Fields afire ?

Where were the apologists when Saddam launched Scud Missles into Israel in the last Gulf War ?

I'll tell you where they were lately - they were the loudest voices crying that "our Government" should have prevented 9/11 !

They were the ones shrieking the loudest about - why didn't we ACT upon our covert INTELLIGENCE INFO !?!?!?!?!?

...and NOW - they're the same ones telling us we CAN'T act upon our covert intelligence info to prevent future domestic Terrorist Acts !?!?!?!?!?

....and you know what ?

- they'll be the same ones asking for the impeachment of GW Bush - WHEN, not if...the next domestic Terror attack kills 30,000, or 300,000 instead of 3,000....and when instead of merely rebuilding a section of the Pentagon - our entire Capital becomes a nuclear wasteland - thanks to Saddams final nuclear solution that he would be all to happy to share with any number of global Terrorist groups.

So many people want it all to - just, go away...

They want to pretend that if it hasn't happened yet, if it isn't happening now...that it won't happen; if we just leave things the way they are now.

But, that's how a child thinks, not an adult.

Their's is fantasy-land - our's is reality.

What would have happened if we failed to respond to Pearl Harbor ?

What would have happened if we didn't land on the shores of Normandy and march into Hitlers Germany ?

Modern Technology has eliminated time & distance.

That huge Ocean on both sides of America, that for decades has separated "us" from "them" and the rest of the world's problems...has now been bridged.

3,000+ died on American soil on September 11th and in case no one noticed..."war" was brought to the homeland by those that hate not just America, but all of the freedoms, all of the technology and all of the abundance that a free, democratic, captilistic system produces...that is what they are at War against...our way of life as a people and as a Country...and hiding in our suburban, gated soccer-mom communities in denial; wishing it would just all go away...isn't going to prevent the next "when, not if" domestic terrorist act...only action in taking out the source of the funding, the technologic development & distribution source of WMD's and those regimes sponsoring, financing, or aiding Terrorisism will...and that is exactly what GW Bush is going to do...and the world will be a safer place for both those who choose to live in fantasyland and those who choose to live in reality.
