I think it's possible he got blown up with his elite guard, so that no one is able to prove he's dead. And quite a few of his former followers wouldn't want him to be dead- for their own purposes, so they perpetuate rumors that he is alive. I think it very likely he is dead, and in such circumstances that we will never find the body.
