Announcements like this are really scary if you think about it; the first is ho hum, the second consists of FINALLY (five years late) allowing a small all in one to work for more than one computer:

(We are not amused.)

HP Makes Strategic Investments In Web Services Management
Monday March 3, 9:19 am ET

ORLANDO, Fla. -(Dow Jones)- Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ - News) created a management team to help customers manage Web services and unveiled a new, all-in-one printing and imaging device for home or office use.

In a press release Monday, the printer, technology software and computer maker said it views Web services management as the next major barrier to mainstream Web services adoption. Consequently, the company developed the dedicated team, who will report to Nora Denzel, senior vice president of software. Additionally, Hewlett-Packard is expanding its OpenView software suite into Web services management, while working closely with partners to contribute to the standards efforts.

"As our customers have learned over the past 20 years through trial and error, management cannot be an afterthought in computing systems. It must be part of the design and deployment of IT infrastructures," Hewlett-Packard's Chairman and Chief Executive Carly Fiorina said in a press release.

Separately, Hewlett-Packard announced a flatbed all-in-one and a home office all-in-one with networking capabilities. Hewlett-Packard said the HP PSC 1210 is the world's smallest flatbed all-in-one, combining photo-quality color printing, scanning and copying in one streamlined product.

The company also announced the HP Officejet 7100 series, which allows small business and home office consumers to access a complete range of color printing, copying, scanning and faxing capabilities.

US bar owner executes Dell laptop
By Lester Haines
Posted: 06/03/2003 at 12:15 GMT

A bar and restaurant owner from Lafayette, Colorado was jailed earlier this week after pumping four rounds into his Dell laptop, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports.

George Doughty, 48, announced to patrons of his Sportsman's Inn Bar and Restaurant that he intended to execute the portable. He then disappeared into his office, returning after thirty minutes with said machine and revolver. Warning punters in the bar to cover their ears, he let the Dell have it with four rounds at close range. Doughty allegedly celebrated this orgy of violence by hanging the grisly remains over the bar like a hunting trophy.

What provoked the gangland-style execution remains unclear, although it does give new meaning to the phrase "percussive maintenance".

Doughty faces charges of felony menacing, reckless endangerment and the prohibited use of weapons. Whether his actions constitute a breach of MS Windows XP licencing terms remains to be seen. ®
