Poet, They have found a hole in the system and they feed on it.
Students are starved of funds already. They do not need beggars nibbling.

I think when I was in school a long time ago in Michigan, they had a similar system. There was a PIRG checkoff box on the tuition bill. I don't recall whether it was opt in or opt out (i.e., whether checking the box meant being assessed the fee, or whether you had to check the box to avoid the fee). I do remember that there was some opposition to giving the PIRG a special fund raising slot on the tuition statement when other groups of different political slants were not granted such access.

So it's not a new issue by any means.
