Hawk, I think we are talking past each other. All states ARE EQUAL according to international law. And you cannot very well decide all who do not have YOUR laws and YOUR customs are illegitimate governments. I see you still do not have a link for what an "illegitimate government" is. Is that because you could not find one supporting your view that all undemocratic governments are illegitimate? Re women's right to vote - Did you know that women got the right to vote in MOST cantons (not all) of Switzerland in 1971? That is more than 40 years AFTER women had the right to vote in Turkey in 1929.timelines.info Would you agree that this did not give Turkey the right to say Switzerland's government was "illegitimate"??? (Give it up, Hawk, you can't win :-)That totalitarianism is no worse than democracy... That is a personal judgement, an opinion we are entitled to. My opinion is that totalitarian regimes ARE worse than democracy. So is yours, I believe. That's OK. ... and should be equally recognized by all as a legitimate government.. When you wake up from this dream, I hope someone will tell you softly that totalitarian governments ARE recognized as legitimate governments of various countries in history, and continue to be recognized as such. Your own country recognized Pinochet's Chile, right? Pakistan, North Korea, etc, they all have regimes we consider "bad" but their governments are recognized as "legitimate" by YOUR COUNTRY. Basically, you are saying that every government that is illegitimate had better watch its step when threatening democratic societies and their allies/associates. Do what they want internally, but do not offend our interests, nor attempt to expand their empire at our expense. If they do, we will put aside our "civilized demeanor" and they will suffer the same fate they had in store for their victims. And being a US "puppet" with the ability to choose their own government down the road is FAR BETTER than being the puppet of France, Germany, and Russia, who are the primary backers of Saddam. So basically, you have no idea about international law and custom. You have no principles as to who you will deal with and who you won't (all depends on whether or not they offend your precious state). You have no consistency in your civilized behaviour as a state. OK, let's move onto another subject.
