In cynical realpolitik terms, they could always declare victory and continue inspections and so on. But that would not satisfy my desire not to betray folks and lose credibility. It would certainly be seen that way. So the question becomes, what concessions, if any, can the french and russians get from iraq if the US agrees to stand down. And will the french and russians be willing to back this up with force--no blue helmets, let the french and russians send troops to back the inspections etc. Mike

A quick aside on the political front: I'm moderately suspicious of the recent spate of articles on W's faithful certitude. Those things don't just materialize out of thin air, with Rove running things on the PR side.
