Hillary Clinton prefers "peaceful solution" in Iraq
Mon Mar 3, 4:44 PM ET

By MARC HUMBERT, Associated Press Writer

WATERVLIET, New York - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (news - web sites) said Monday that the United States should continue its attempts to build an international alliance rather than going to war quickly with Iraq (news - web sites).

But the former first lady said she wasn't opposed to an eventual war, even if the United States had to go into battle with only Britain and a few other allies, if that is what it takes to disarm Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).

Nonetheless, inspection is preferable to war, if it works, the New York Democrat said.

"It is preferable that we do this in a peaceful manner through coercive inspection ... but if it's just more of the same equivocation and prevarication we've had from him before, at some point we have to be willing to uphold the United Nations (news - web sites) resolutions," she said.

"This is a very delicate balancing act," New York's junior senator told reporters during a visit to the Watervliet Arsenal, the only government-owned facility producing large guns for the U.S. military, just north of Albany.

"I fully support the policy of disarming Saddam Hussein," she stressed, a row of highly polished gun barrels not far from her side.

Clinton, wife of former President Bill Clinton, last year voted for a resolution granting President George W. Bush (news - web sites) the power to use military force against Iraq.

But on Monday, the senator said the Bush administration still had work to do at convincing the American public and the rest of the world that Hussein presented a real threat that might require military action.

"The administration should continue to try to enlist more support," she added.....
