That is a good column. Thanks for posting.

I don't know whether Saddam is a real threat to us or not. I do know that in 1937 we didn't consider Hitler a real thread. And in the summer of 1941 we didn't consider Japan a real threat to us. So we've been wrong about that before. That doesn't mean Bush is right this time. But it shows that the cost of being wrong about who our enemies are and how much they can hurt us can be very, very high.

I'm posting this Safire column because it's the most intelligent, lucid, and nearly compelling argument I've seen for war. Actually it's the first and only one I've seen

Every argument in that article has been made by numerous people in different contexts (from SI posts, to editorials, to speeches by administration officials). There really isn't anything new in the article.
