It was the most powerful military in the world. Appeasement meant handing country after country to Hitler hoping to keep him quiet. This subject, and the uncanny comparison with the so-called disarmament of Iraq over the last 12 years, it worthy of further discussion. Germany was "disarmed" during the early 20s. But a world community didn't have the will to follow maintain a watchful eye. There are exceptionally strong parallels between Germany's covert military buildup beginning, essentially, in the mid- to late-20s, and Iraq's covert WMD programs of the last 12 years. Damn it, know your history before you go off spouting falsehoods. The Weimar Republic was in power until Hitler's party took over in 1932. During the 20s, the Weimar Republic/Germany was broke trying to maintain the horrendous reparation payments to the allies. The idea is ludicrous that they were doing a covert military buildup in the mid twenties. If you insist that thats true, then provide a link because I think you are making it up as you go along. By 1932, Hitler's party gained critical control of the Reichstag and in 1933, he was appointed Chancellor. A short while later he was given dictatorial powers. It was then the German military buildup began in earnest and quickly. By the time, Europe was practising appeasement with Hilter, Germany was a formidable power once again and began to annex country after country in the late 30's. Essentially, Hiltler when unapposed for two-three years before the allies reacted. Saddam came to power through a military coup. He was in power and supported by the US for nearly twenty years before we went to war with him [btw as soon as he invaded Kuwait] . Since that war, he is a shadow of the dictator that he once was.....clearly he is in his sunset years. Your comparison between the two is a weak one and clearly, is intended to generate fear and apprehension.........the favorite tool of the current administration. However, the facts show that you don't know about what you are talking. There are not "strong parallels" between the two. ted
